Hamel, Rebenciuc Sweep MASCAC Weekly Honors
Westfield State junior Shea Hamel and first-year Sophia Rebenciuc swept the conference weekly honors as Hamel was named the MASCAC Runner of the Week while Rebenciuc was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior Shea Hamel (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year Sophia Rebenciuc (Southwick, Mass.) swept the conference weekly honors this past week as Hamel was named the MASCAC Runner of the Week while Rebenciuc was tabbed the conference's Rookie of the Week.
Hamel was first across the finish line for Westfield, placing tenth overall in the individual standings in a time of 19:04 as the Owls hosted the 28th James Earley Invitational from Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
Hamel received the conference's Runner of the Week for the second time this season as her previous honors came after a first-place individual performance at the Owls' season-opening meet at Keene State.
Rebenciuc earned her second consecutive MASCAC Rookie of the Week honors after finishing in 26th place on the individual performance list out of a total of 155 runners at the James Earley Invitational. She posted a time of 19:48, assisting the Owls to a third-place team mark in a meet featuring a total of 16 teams.
Last week, Rebenciuc was named the conference Rookie of the Week for the first time after a 40th-place finish at the Keene State Invitational as she covered the 5k course in a time of 19:25.1 which is currently her personal-best time.
Westfield State women's cross country will split up between two upcoming meets on Saturday as the Owls travel to Connecticut College and Western New England.
