Andresen Registers 100th Career Point in Setback Against Worcester
The Owls will be the two seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament with the loss.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Worcester State University outscored Westfield 10-1 in the second quarter to build a big lead halftime lead on the way to a 19-14 win over Westfield State, giving the Lancers the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season women's lacrosse title with the win at Alumni Field on Tuesday night.
Worcester State improved to 11-5 overall, 6-0 in the MASCAC. Westfield is 8-8, 5-1 in the league.
Worcester secured the league's regular season title by virtue of holding a head-to-head tie breaker edge with Westfield with one league game remaining this weekend for both teams. The Lancers will be the top seed in next week's MASCAC tournament and will hold home-field advantage throughout the tournament. Westfield will be the second seed in the tournament.
The Lancers led 15-7 at the half behind goals from six different scorers. The Lancers dominated the center draws, winning 19 to the Owls four in the first 30 minutes.
Westfield led 7-5 less than a minute into the second half after Kayli Bush fired home a feed from Shea O'Brien, but from there the Lancers went on a spree.
Worcester tied the game at 7-7 after Fallon Lozano rolled the crease and found the net with a right-handed shot with 11:03 left in the first half.
Shannon Donahue drove to the net on the left side and finished with a high shot to make it 8-7 Lancers. Lozano added another goal on the ensuing possession to make it a 4-0 Lancers run and a 9-7 Worcester lead.
Mckayla Fisher threw several jukes at an Owls defender to shake loose and scored from the middle of the fan to make it 10-7 and forced an Owls timeout, but Worcester again won the ensuing draw and converted with a goal from Meghan Bowen to make it 11-7, and the run didn't stop until Fisher scored with just five seconds left in the half.
Westfield responded out of the gate in the second half, winning the opening draw, and cashing in with a goal from Christina Roncarati to break what was a 10-0 Lancers scoring run.
Westfield got a goal from Arianna Andresen on a loose ball in the middle of the fan that she scooped up and then fired into the top right corner of the goal to trim the Lancer lead to 17-11 with 7:23 left in the third. The goal was the 100th point of Andresen's career at Westfield State – giving a spark to the Owls bench and yielding a time out from the Lancers.
The Owls further reeled the lead back to 17-12 when Marena Morales delivered a low sidearm rip on a free position shot with just over four minutes left in the third quarter.
Westfield trailed 17-13 entering the fourth quarter. Worcester's Fisher fed Lozano from the top of the fan for the first goal of the fourth quarter 1:17 into the period to boost the lead back to five.
Westfield was led by five goals from Roncarati. Morales finished with four goals and four assists.
Izzy Conley finished with 15 saves in goal for the Owls.
Donahue led Worcester with six goals. Lozano added four goals and two assists.
Cadence Oleniak made six saves for the Lancers.
Westfield State wraps up regular season play on Saturday as the Owls host Fitchburg State for senior day at 12:00 P.M. on Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass.
