Beaulieu Scores Late to Secure 1-1 Draw Versus Colby-Sawyer in Season Opener
The Utica College transfer buried the Owls equalizer with 13:09 left to secure a 1-1 draw.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – In her first game with Westfield State, senior transfer Julianna Beaulieu (Southwick, Mass.) tied the match with 13:09 remaining as the Owls tied Colby-Sawyer 1-1 in the 2025 regular season opener from Kelsey Soccer Field in New London, N.H. on Friday afternoon.
Beaulieu set up the scoring chance on a lofted ball from the midfield which was positioned down the right sideline and tracked down by senior Tori Dodge (North Canaan, Conn.). Dodge settled the ball then crossed it into the box to Beaulieu who struck a left-footed shot past the diving Gabby Calidonio (Flagler Beach, Fla.), off the far post, and into the back of the net to tie the match at one goal apiece.
Both teams scored in the second half of the match with the Owls needing to come from behind to force a draw after the Chargers scored on a penalty kick in the first minute of the half. Colby-Sawyer possessed the ball to open the period, transitioning into the Owls end and drawing a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty try. Lauren Ardolino (Milford, Conn.) attempted the shot and positioned a right-side shot into the net to break the scoreless tie.
From that point forward, the Owls pressed on the offensive, resulting in a 14-2 shot disparity in the second half in favor of the Owls. Westfield nearly took the lead in the final five minutes of the game with Beaulieu rocketing a shot from the top of the box off the crossbar and out of play.
With one minute left in the match, Kiki McNary (Brattleboro, Vt.) drew a foul outside the left edge of the penalty area, setting up a free kick by Kylie Tomasetti (Northborough, Mass.) who sent the ball into a crowd of players in the middle of the box where Calidonio made an aggressive play to catch the ball in the air, preventing a scoring chance for Westfield.
Calidonio made 13 saves for Colby-Sawyer to keep the Chargers in the match. Owls keeper Julia Robak (Chicopee, Mass.) made three saves, one of which was a particular high danger chance in the first half, denying Eve Van Wickler (Sturbridge, Mass.) of a goal by making a diving stop to her right on a close shot attempt.
Westfield finished the match with a definitive 22-4 shot advantage including 14 shots on goal to the Chargers four.
Westfield State (0-0-1) will be back in action on Sunday at 12:00 P.M. as the Owls take on Emerson College from Coly-Sawyer in New London, N.H.
