Westfield State senior goalkeeper Julia Robak made six saves to post the clean sheet as the Owls opened Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a 1-0 win at Fitchburg State on Saturday.
Westfield got the lone goal of the match from first-year student Julianna Lanzillo in the 69th minute of play, as she settled a pass from Morgan Berthiaume, and found the back of the net.
Westfield improves to 1-3-1 on the year, and more importantly starts conference play 1-0. Fitchburg dips to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the MASCAC.
Westfield outshot the Falcons 20-14 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Falcons GK Madison Dawkins finished with eight saves.
The Owls will travel to Eastern Connecticut for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
