WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State University's fall athletic teams are in full swing with most competing this weekend.
HOME GAMES
Saturday features a pair of home events, as defending league champion men's soccer kicks off with conference foe Fitchburg State at 12 noon on Alumni Field. This game will be Westfield State's home opener, as the Owls are coming off a 3-1 win at Regis on Wednesday night. Westfield is 2-1 on the season and led by the scoring of Nick Parakilas, who tallied a pair of goals each of the Owls first two wins. Fitchburg is 1-2-1 after getting their first win under new head coach Theofanis Booras.
Volleyball action will be ongoing in the Woodward Center, as the Owls host Eastern Connecticut at 11 a.m., and UNE at 3 p.m., with two visiting squads clashing at 1 p.m. in the tri match. The Owls will be looking for their second win of the season. Seniors Hanna Nihill and Emily Washkalavitch lead Westfield in hitting so far this season.
Sunday, Owls women's golf tees off in the Westfield State Invitational at Tekoa Country Club in Westfield, with a 1:00 p.m. tee time. Returnees Dorothy Duval, Antonia Erickson, and Katie MacDonald highlight the Owls lineup.
ON THE ROAD
Westfield State football plays week 2 at Bridgewater State University, the MASCAC Conference opener for both schools. Westfield is 0-1 after falling in a lightning shortened game to Castleton State, while the Bears are 0-1 after a 35-28 loss against Curry. Westfield will look to conference rookie of the week Manny Mengata to help power the running game, while captain Budder Ferreira made nine stops and had a hand in a couple of turnovers last weekend. Bears QB Shamus Whiting threw for 328 yards and a pair of scores last week and will be the flashpoint for the Owls' defense. Kickoff is 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Owls women's soccer kicks off conference play at Fitchburg State at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Westfield is 0-3-1 out of the gate and looking for added scoring punch. Grad transfer Julianna Beaulieu has tallied both of the Owls' goals so far this season. In goal, senior Julia Robak leads a defense that has surrendered just one goal in three of four games this year.
